Higher Education in times of crisis - The perspective of Saint Joseph University of Beirut
Join the conversation with Salim Daccache, s.j., Rector and Prof. Carla Eddé, Vice Rector for International Relations
Lebanon is enduring a severe and prolonged economic depression, which is likely to rank in the top three most severe crises episodes globally since the mid-nineteenth century according to The World Bank. The Beirut port explosion caused at least 218 deaths, 7,000 injuries, and US$ 15 billion in property damage. Moreover, around 1.5 million Syrian refugees remain displaced in Lebanon – accounting for nearly a quarter of Lebanon’s total population, the highest proportion of refugees anywhere in the world. Continuous policy inaction threatens already dire socio-economic conditions and a fragile social peace.
In this sad context, Higher Education institutions face colossal challenges: massive inflation, power cuts, fuel sharp price increase, extreme poverty, brain drain, but also the absence of a quality assurance agency for higher education and other legal constraints.
In this Webinar, Father Salim Daccache and Mrs. Carle Edde will present the situation in Lebanon, focusing on the case of Saint Joseph University of Beirut, founded by the Society of Jesus in 1875, and its daily struggle to maintain academic excellence and build a future for the youth and the country.
Prof. Salim Daccache s.j. is the Rector of Saint Joseph University of Beirut since August 2012; the President of the Universities Association of Lebanon; the President of the Board of directors of Hôtel-Dieu de France hospital; a full board member of the International Association of Universities (IAU); and the president of GLADIC, the Lebanese Group for friendship and Christian Islamic dialogue. He holds two doctoral degrees (in Philosophy at the University Panthéon-Sorbonne I, Paris and in Education Sciences at the University of Strasbourg-France).
Prof. Carla Eddé is presently Vice-rector for International Relations and a professor of Middle East Studies at Saint-Joseph University of Beirut. She holds a double PhD in History at Aix-Marseille University and Saint Joseph University of Beirut.
